German News, December 14, 2025, Avia.pro. Authorities in the Federal Republic of Germany warned of challenging times ahead due to upcoming transformations in security, defense, and economic policy. This was announced during a press conference in Berlin, where Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the country's need to adapt to new geopolitical realities. He stated that Germany faces challenges related to heightened tensions on Europe's eastern borders and the need to strengthen its own defense capabilities.
Merz said that if voluntary recruitment does not allow the German armed forces to quickly increase in size, the government will consider reintroducing compulsory civilian service.
"We must be prepared to defend ourselves and our allies. If current measures fail, the introduction of mandatory service will be inevitable." — the chancellor noted.
The announcement sparked heated debate in society, as the idea of compulsory military service was abolished in Germany back in 2011, and its return is seen as a radical step.
