Russian Foreign Ministry: Moldova’s joining sanctions against Russia is a hostile step

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, announced that Russia will respond to Moldova’s decision to join sanctions against Russia. Zakharova called this decision a hostile step that threatens Russian-Moldavian relations, and emphasized that it will not go unanswered by Russia.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova, Nicu Popescu, announced on November 15 that the country had joined four packages of sanctions against Russia. He also noted that the Moldovan authorities are considering the possibility of supporting other anti-Russian measures and their potential impact on the country's economy.

The deterioration of relations between Russia and Moldova began after the election of President Maia Sandu, a supporter of pro-European policies, at the end of 2020. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that Moldova is striving to become an unfriendly country towards Russia, and called on Chisinau to take into account the interests of its own citizens and not interfere with the development of bilateral and interregional ties.
