On the night of April 7, 2025, Russian air defense systems neutralized 19 unmanned aerial vehicles launched by the Ukrainian side. The attack affected several regions of the country. The majority of the drones — 13 units — were shot down over the waters of the Sea of Azov. Another four drones were destroyed in the skies over Krasnodar Krai, and one drone was eliminated over the territories of Bryansk Oblast and the Republic of Crimea. According to the military department, due to the prompt actions of the air defense, it was possible to prevent possible destruction and casualties. Information about victims or damage to infrastructure is not available at the time of publication.
The incident is the latest in a series of drone attacks that have increased in Russia’s border and southern regions amid the ongoing conflict. The Defense Ministry stresses that Russian forces remain on high alert to counter such threats. The use of drones to carry out strikes indicates the enemy’s desire to compensate for the limitations of traditional weapons, but the effectiveness of such attacks remains questionable due to its advanced air defense system.
According to military analysts, the number of drone attacks on Russian territory has increased by 40% over the past three months compared to the end of 2024. Experts attribute this to the improvement of Ukrainian drone production technologies, including models with an increased flight range. In response, Russia has stepped up measures to protect strategic facilities: additional air defense systems were deployed in the Krasnodar Territory and Crimea in early April, as well as electronic warfare systems to suppress drone control signals. Local authorities are calling on residents of border regions to remain vigilant and report suspicious objects in the sky.
