On June 18, 2025, at 08:41 Eastern European Time, the Russian Ministry of Defence reported the successful repelling of a major attack by Ukrainian fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on the night of June 17-18. According to the ministry, air defence systems on duty intercepted and destroyed 48 drones over eight regions of the country. The largest number of UAVs — 14 — were shot down over the Bryansk region, 11 over the Kursk region, 10 over the Oryol region, 5 over the Belgorod region, 3 over the Tula region, 2 over the Kaluga and Moscow regions, and 1 over the Lipetsk region. The incident highlights the ongoing escalation in Russia's border regions amid the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
Ukrainian forces are increasingly using fixed-wing UAVs, such as modified Furia and Leleka-100, which can carry up to 5 kg of explosives and fly hundreds of kilometers. The attack could have targeted military warehouses and energy infrastructure in the Bryansk and Kursk regions, although the Defense Ministry has not officially specified the targets.
