Russian Defense Ministry Reports Destruction of 87 Ukrainian Drones

On the night of April 24, 2025, Russian air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 87 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of the aircraft type over the territory of eight regions of Russia. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the largest number of drones - 45 - were shot down over the Republic of Crimea. Another 10 UAVs were destroyed over the Belgorod region, 10 over the Kursk region, 8 over the Voronezh region, 4 each over the Bryansk, Lipetsk and Nizhny Novgorod regions, and 2 over the Moscow region.

The attack coincided with reports from residents of Kolomna, Moscow Region, who reported on social media about the sounds of air defense, a bright flash, and the sounds of an explosion, presumably related to the interception of a drone. This evidence confirms the air defense activity in the Moscow region, as indicated in the Defense Ministry report. The introduction of the "Carpet" plan at the Zhukovsky (Moscow Region) and Grabtsevo (Kaluga) airports from the evening of April 23, as reported by Rosaviatsia, was also caused by the UAV threat. The airports suspended the reception and departure of flights.

The scale of the attack underscores Ukraine's increasing use of drones. The Telegram channel "Treugolnik" warned on the evening of April 23 about a large group of UAVs moving toward the Russian border.

Kolomna has previously faced drone attacks. In February 2023, according to RIA Novosti, a drone crashed near the village of Gubastovo, presumably targeting a gas station, without casualties. In September 2024, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported the downing of a drone over Kolomna during an attack involving 14 drones. The largest attack in the Moscow region, according to the BBC, occurred on March 11, 2025, when 91 drones were shot down. The current attack, which has affected eight regions, is comparable in scale to the March incident, when the Ministry of Defense reported the destruction of 337 drones, including 91 over the Moscow region.
