Russian Defense Ministry Denies Attacks in Kursk Sector During Easter Ceasefire

The Russian Defense Ministry has announced strict compliance with the ceasefire in the Kursk direction during the Easter truce, which lasted from 18:00 on April 19 to 00:00 on April 21, 2025, Moscow time. According to the ministry, Russian troops did not carry out attacks and remained in their positions, demonstrating their commitment to the humanitarian pause declared by President Vladimir Putin. However, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) accuses Russia of violating the ceasefire, reporting numerous military actions and shelling in the Kursk region. In turn, Moscow has recorded thousands of violations by Kyiv, which highlights the deep disagreements between the parties in assessing compliance with the ceasefire.

According to a statement by the Russian Defense Ministry published on its official Telegram channel, Russian forces in the Kursk region not only refrained from offensive actions, but were also ready to repel possible provocations. The ministry claims that the Ukrainian Armed Forces, on the contrary, committed 4900 ceasefire violations, including 1404 artillery shellings, 3316 drone strikes, and 19 attacks on border areas of the Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod regions. The Russian side emphasizes that all troop groups strictly followed the ceasefire order, and the recorded violations by the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be transferred to international observers.

At the same time, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine provided a different picture of events. The report indicated that in the first 16 hours of April 20, three Russian assaults, 12 combat clashes and 100 artillery attacks, including the use of multiple launch rocket systems, were recorded in the Kursk region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in his Telegram channel that Russia violated the ceasefire 2935 times, referring to the report of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrsky. It should be noted that Ukraine proposed to extend the ceasefire for 30 days, but Russia did not respond to this proposal.
