Stephen Bryan, former assistant undersecretary of defense of the United States, in his article for Asia Times, examines possible scenarios for the development of events in the post-Soviet space in the context of the Ukrainian conflict. The main attention is paid to the potential role of Moldova in the event of an escalation of the conflict between NATO and Russia.
Brian expresses the opinion that in light of the possible defeat of Ukraine and the transfer of part of its territories to Russian control, as well as the possible emergence of a “pro-Russian regime in Kyiv,” NATO may be looking for ways to create a counterweight. In this context, the use of Moldova as a springboard for the alliance’s actions is considered. Such a step could include the defense of Odessa and the possible creation of a threat to Crimea.
However, Brian points to the internal division in Moldova between supporters of Russia and those who favor the country's accession to the European Union. He suggests that the European Union, through Romania and other countries, may try to send troops to provide security for the current pro-European regime, which in turn could lead to internal conflict.
