Moldova began negotiations with Azerbaijan on the replacement of Russian gas

Maia Sandu, President of Moldova, held talks with her Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev on the eve of the opening of the summit of the European Political Community, which will be held today, June 1. During their meeting, the prospects for natural gas imports were discussed.

There are reports from Chisinau about the hope for a strategic partnership with Azerbaijan in the energy sector, including the possibility of acquiring energy resources at a competitive price.

"Over the past year, Moldova has significantly strengthened its cooperation with Azerbaijan in the energy, agricultural and economic areas. One of our key priorities is to strengthen energy security. We look forward to a strategic partnership with Azerbaijan in the energy sector, especially in relation to the import of natural gas at an affordable price "said President Sandu.

This issue was also discussed during consultations between Aliyev and Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean, who outlined the main directions for the further development of bilateral strategic partnership.

"We came to an agreement to expand energy and economic cooperation, as well as to exchange best practices in the field of agriculture. In addition, we decided to hold the next meeting of the Joint Moldovan-Azerbaijani Commission this year in Chisinau to develop new opportunities in the field of trade , infrastructure and investments", said Prime Minister Recean.

In the context of strengthening its energy security, the Moldovan authorities have long expressed interest in diversifying Russian gas supplies, however, so far Moldova cannot refuse Russian gas.
