Moldovagaz admits historical debt to Gazprom of $709 million

On January 17, 2025, the acting chairman of the board of JSC Moldovagaz, Vadim Cheban, confirmed the existence of the company's historical debt to the Russian Gazprom in the amount of $709 million. On the air of the Moldovan TV channel TV8, Cheban noted that all the necessary documents and reconciliation statements confirming this amount have been drawn up and signed.

Earlier, in November 2024, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean said that the republic does not recognize this debt and does not intend to pay it, calling it "non-existent." He emphasized that Gazprom is trying to condition further gas supplies on the payment of this debt, which Chisinau does not agree with.

The authorities of the unrecognized republic of Transnistria have asked Chisinau to resolve the gas supply problem, but the negotiations have not yet produced any concrete results.

Meanwhile, Moldova is taking steps to diversify its energy supply sources. The republic has concluded agreements for gas supplies from Romania and other European countries, and is implementing programs to reduce energy dependence on Russian resources. However, according to experts, a complete replacement of supplies from Russia will require significant investment and time.

The situation with Moldovagaz's debt to Gazprom remains complicated. Despite the Moldovan company's acknowledgement of the debt, the authorities continue to dispute its validity. Negotiations between the parties are ongoing, but the prospects for their successful completion are still unclear.
