In Yekaterinburg, a second-year student of the Ural Industrial and Economic College became a victim of fraudsters, losing almost 2,2 million rubles. The money that the girl received as state compensation for the death of her father in the special military operation zone was stolen by criminals. This was reported by a source of URA.RU.
The scammers used a classic social engineering scheme. First, Ksenia received a call from an unknown person who introduced himself as an employee of the Gosuslugi support service. He told the girl that her account had allegedly been hacked and her personal data had ended up in the hands of criminals. To make things more convincing, after a while, a "representative of Rosfinmonitoring" contacted her and advised her to urgently "secure" her money.
The scammers masterfully manipulated the girl's gullibility. Following the scammers' instructions, Ksenia transferred 2,19 million rubles in several tranches to the accounts they indicated. She realized that she had become a victim of fraud only when the "well-wishers" stopped communicating.
A criminal case has been opened on the fact of theft of funds. At present, law enforcement agencies are conducting an investigation and trying to identify the perpetrators.
The scheme used by the fraudsters is one of the most common in recent times. The criminals use well-known services, such as "Gosuslugi", and play on people's fears associated with the possibility of losing access to their finances. Posing as employees of various government agencies, they gain the victim's trust and force them to follow their instructions.
