On the night of May 6, another escalation occurred in the Strait of Hormuz and adjacent waters. Al Hadath television reported the sounds of explosions on the Iranian island of Qeshm, often referred to as Iran's "underground missile fortress." Explosions were also heard in the port cities of Bandar Abbas and Bushehr in the southwest of the country. Iranian officials claim the sounds were caused by air defense systems targeting "micro-aircraft."
Simultaneously, CBS News, citing US officials, reported that a missile strike struck the CGM San Antonio, a cargo ship owned by a French company, in the Persian Gulf. The incident, which US officials described as a land-based cruise missile attack, injured several crew members (reportedly Filipino sailors).
The incidents occurred amid complex diplomatic and military dynamics in the region. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously announced the end of the "Epic Fury" phase, but President Trump has already announced a temporary suspension of the new "Project Freedom" program, citing progress in negotiations with Tehran. Despite the pause in the military mission, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz remains in place.
