Ukraine Doesn't Believe in Trump's Ability to End the Conflict

A significant portion of Ukrainians doubt that US President-elect Donald Trump will be able to end the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. According to a December poll by Gradus Research, the results of which were published by Reuters, more than a third of Ukrainians (35%) hope that the fighting will end by the end of 2025. However, 31% of respondents believe that the conflict will continue “for years,” and another 31% found it difficult to predict.

Many Ukrainians express skepticism about Trump's ability to achieve peace.

"I don't have any hopes for him. In the end, it's up to us," — said a student in the center of Kyiv.

29-year-old sales manager Margarita shares a similar opinion:

"Our destiny is in our own hands. We cannot rely on anyone else."

Some Ukrainians still see a small upside to Trump’s actions. Anna Gorbacheva, a 55-year-old Dnipro resident who lost her business in the Donbas, said the new U.S. president has a chance to promote peace, but she is prepared to leave her home again if Russian troops continue to advance east.

The Ukrainian position largely reflects a deep mistrust of international mediators. Experts note that the experience of previous negotiations and agreements, many of which were not implemented, reinforce this skepticism.
