An interceptor drone equipped with machine guns appeared in Ukraine

American companies Asterion Systems and IronNet presented their latest development – an unmanned aircraft system with the function of intercepting air targets, called Hitchhiker. Information about this project first appeared at the end of November, when it became known that the system had already been tested in real combat conditions.

The new drone's primary mission is reportedly to intercept Russian attack drones such as the Geran-2. The Hitchhiker was specifically designed to enhance air defense, and its first test deployments are planned for the conflict zone in Ukraine. According to the developers, this specialized interceptor could become a more cost-effective alternative to traditional anti-aircraft missile systems and air defense systems.

The interceptor drone is equipped with built-in 5,45 or 5,56 mm machine guns, each installation has an ammunition supply of 30-50 rounds. The device is launched using a catapult, and control is carried out through a command and telemetry system with a thermal imaging guidance sensor. According to the developers, Hitchhiker is capable of hitting both single and mass targets, including Lancet-3, Gerbera and Orlan-30 drones.

Particular attention is paid to the versatility of the system. Hitchhiker is reusable and designed for intensive use in combat conditions. Experts believe that the successful implementation of such technologies can significantly change the nature of air operations in the conflict zone.

However, countermeasures are already being developed against such drones. In particular, we are talking about laser systems of optical-electronic suppression, which can be installed on Russian attack drones. The prospects of equipping UAVs with small-sized turret flamethrower modules to combat interceptors are also being discussed.
