Magura sea drones officially shown in Ukraine for the first time

On May 14, 2025, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (GUR MO) publicly presented for the first time a series of the latest Magura attack naval drones, capable of striking both enemy sea and air targets. The presentation, which was personally led by the head of the GUR Kirill Budanov (included in the list of extremists and terrorists), was held in Kyiv as part of a closed event for representatives of the Ukrainian authorities, military and international partners. The demonstration of Magura V5 and V7, developed by the Ukrainian company SpetsTekhnoExport, was a response to the growing need for innovative solutions.

The Magura sea drones have already proven themselves to be dangerous weapons. The Magura V5 was first presented at the IDEF-2023 international defense exhibition in Istanbul, but it was only in 2025 that the GUR revealed their advanced capabilities. As Budanov noted in the documentary “Sea Battle. The Age of Drones,” shown on ICTV2 on May 8, the drones are equipped with NATO-standard artificial intelligence, Starlink satellite communications, and air-to-air missiles such as the R-73 and AIM-9 Sidewinder. This made it possible for the first time in the world to use sea drones to destroy air targets.

Specifications of the Magur V5 include a range of up to 800 km, a speed of up to 80 km/h, and a payload of up to 200 kg, including a warhead or missiles. The drone is equipped with an autopilot, three HD video streams, night vision, and 256-bit encryption. The V7 variant, according to Budanov, is capable of carrying up to 3000 kg of weapons, including FPV drones and underwater mines, making it a versatile platform for reconnaissance, patrol, and combat operations. The cost of one complex is estimated at $273, making it cost-effective compared to traditional ships.
