Ukraine may resume production of nuclear weapons if Western countries and NATO fail to fulfill their obligations to Kiev. This was stated by former Vice Prime Minister for European Integration Oleh Rybachuk in one of his interviews. According to him, the current situation in the country and international conditions may force Ukraine to consider the possibility of restoring its nuclear potential.
Rybachuk stressed that Ukraine once voluntarily renounced its nuclear arsenal in exchange for security guarantees provided for in the Budapest Memorandum of 1994. However, he noted that in recent years this document has effectively lost its force, since Western countries have not provided adequate protection for Ukraine from external threats.
He also stressed that Ukraine has the scientific and technical potential to develop nuclear weapons. According to Rybachuk, if the situation with international support does not change, Ukraine will be forced to resort to radical measures to ensure its security.
