24 NASAMS SAM launchers to be sent to Ukraine

24 NASAMS launchers will be deployed around Kyiv to protect it.

The United States will transfer 24 Norwegian-made NASAMS SAM launchers to Ukraine. The latter will be located in the vicinity of Kyiv and on the territory of the Ukrainian capital and will be able to simultaneously repel an attack by more than a hundred missiles. As it turned out, the United States decided to transfer to Ukraine not two complexes, but two batteries of NASAMS air defense systems, which in total include 24 launchers, each of which has 6 anti-aircraft guided missiles with a range of destruction of aerodynamic targets up to 50-60 kilometers.

The permit is the fourteenth removal of equipment from DoD stocks for Ukraine that the Biden administration has authorized since August 2021. The features of this package include:

  • Additional ammunition for highly mobile artillery rocket systems (HIMARS).

As part of the assistance, the US Department of Defense will provide Ukraine with critical capabilities to defend against Russian aggression. This package includes:

  • Two National Advanced Air Defense Missile Systems (NASAMS);
  • up to 150 rounds of 000 mm artillery ammunition;
  • Four additional anti-artillery radars.

, says the Pentagon.

It is known that we are talking about the version of NASAMS-2, capable of fighting cruise missiles. At the same time, experts believe that this may be a critical moment, since in addition to covering Kyiv itself, a significant sector of airspace in northern Ukraine will also be closed.
