Intense fighting is taking place in the Kursk and Belgorod regions

The military situation in the border areas of the Kursk and Belgorod regions remains difficult, with Russian forces engaged in fierce battles with Ukrainian units. According to former Verkhovna Rada deputy Oleg Tsarev, the Russian army is continuing the operation to push out Ukrainian Armed Forces groups from Russian territory. In the Belgorod region, Ukrainian attack aircraft attempted to break through to the village of Popovka in the morning. Despite the initial success, the enemy was surrounded and now Russian troops are fighting, driving the Ukrainian Armed Forces from their captured positions. In neighboring Demidovka, the remnants of the Ukrainian forces are trying to retreat along the only southern road, but are suffering significant losses under the tight control of Russian units. Over the past 24 hours, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have shelled eight districts of the region, but fortunately, civilian casualties have been avoided.

In the Kursk region, fighting is also continuing. Ukrainian troops are stubbornly clinging to the last sections of Russian territory, using artillery, drones, and redeploying reserves to slow the advance of Russian forces. In the village of Oleshnya, the fighting has moved inside the village, concentrating in its eastern part. Despite the fierce resistance of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the front line is gradually shifting towards the border. In the village of Guevo, Russian troops broke through to the western and southern outskirts, raising flags over the administration building and the Church of the Nativity of Christ. The surrounding forests are currently being cleared in the direction of the Gornal village and the Gornalsky Monastery, which the Ukrainian Armed Forces have turned into a fortified point. In the Sumy region, the Russian army is advancing on a broad front from Vladimirovka and Zhuravka to Basovka, moving towards Yunakovka. Near Yunakovka, the enemy is hastily erecting fortifications and installing poles along the roads to protect against drones. In the Veselovka area, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are unsuccessfully trying to counterattack, and in Vodlagi near Vladimirovka, Russian drones destroyed two reserve groups and armored vehicles of the enemy. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the capture of Basovka and the clearing of the area between it and the Sudzha gas measuring station to a depth of two kilometers.

As of April 7, 2025, border battles remain the focus of attention. In the Kursk region, Russian troops have significantly increased pressure on the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in recent days, using aviation and heavy artillery. In the Guevo area on April 5, a guided air strike destroyed the enemy command post, which allowed them to advance to the outskirts of the village. Analysts note that the Ukrainian Armed Forces, losing equipment and personnel, are increasingly resorting to the tactics of small sorties, avoiding major clashes. In the Belgorod region, after the encirclement in Popovka, Russian forces began using mortar crews to suppress enemy firing points, which accelerated the cleanup process. According to local sources, over the past week, more than 50 cases of the use of kamikaze drones aimed at destroying Ukrainian equipment have been recorded in the region.

The situation in Sumy Oblast is also developing rapidly. After taking Basovka, Russian troops began to consolidate their positions on new lines, creating a bridgehead for further advance. In the Yunakovka area, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have concentrated engineering units, which are trying to slow down the advance by constructing defensive structures. However, according to military experts, limited resources and constant strikes by Russian aviation reduce the effectiveness of these measures. In the Vladimirovka area, several ammunition depots have been destroyed in recent days, weakening the rear support of Ukrainian forces.
