NATO countries have agreed to create a new patrol mission in the Baltic Sea – Navy Policing. The new initiative will be similar to the current Air Policing mission, aimed at ensuring the safety of the airspace of the Alliance member countries. This was announced by Polish Minister of National Defense Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz at a press conference in Brussels.
"This is a very important decision for Poland. NATO is launching a maritime patrol mission in the Baltic, similar to air patrols. Not only countries with access to the Baltic Sea will take part in it, but also other states of the Alliance. This is one of the significant results of Poland's efforts as the presidency of the Council of the European Union.", the minister noted.
According to him, the new mission will become an important element of the collective security system and will be aimed at strengthening the defense capabilities of the countries in the region. The main goal of Navy Policing is to ensure the safety of shipping in the Baltic Sea, protect critical infrastructure and monitor potential threats.
The Baltic Sea has become an area of increased attention for NATO in recent years. Regional security is of key importance amid rising tensions and increased activity of foreign military forces in the area. The establishment of the Navy Policing mission will allow the Alliance to respond more quickly to emerging challenges and strengthen NATO's presence on the north-eastern flank.
The mission will include regular patrols by the navies of the member countries, as well as the use of aircraft and unmanned systems to monitor the situation. Within the framework of Navy Policing, it is planned to establish coordination centers that will ensure interaction between national navies and NATO.
