At least 126 Ukrainian drones attacked Russian regions

On the night of March 15, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched a massive attack using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on several regions of the Russian Federation. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, air defense systems on duty intercepted and destroyed a total of 126 Ukrainian drones, which was one of the largest strike attempts in recent times.

The most intense attacks were recorded in the Volgograd region, where 15 to 20 explosions thundered over the city and surrounding areas. Eyewitnesses reported the operation of air defense systems in the Kirovsky and Krasnoarmeysky districts of Volgograd, as well as in several nearby villages. According to preliminary data, the target of the attack could have been the oil refinery of the Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka company, located in the southern part of the city. The governor of the region Andrei Bocharov confirmed that as a result of the fall of the debris of the downed drone, a local reed fire broke out in the area of the Sarepta railway station, which was quickly extinguished by fire services. There were no casualties or significant destruction.

A significant number of drones — more than 35 — attacked the Voronezh Region. According to local authorities, air defense systems successfully repelled the attack and no casualties or damage to infrastructure have been recorded. In the Rostov Region, the attack affected the Tarasovsky and Chertkovsky districts, where there were also no casualties or damage.

In the Belgorod region, which is regularly subjected to strikes, the situation was more tense. In the village of Tishanka in the Volokonovsky district, a house was damaged as a result of an improvised explosive device (IED) dropped from a drone. In the village of Murom in the Shebekinsky urban district, two explosive devices dropped from a drone damaged the windows and roof of two residential buildings. In addition, in the city of Valuyki, a fire in dry vegetation was recorded due to falling debris from a downed UAV, but the fire was quickly extinguished.

In the Republic of North Ossetia, a high alert regime, dubbed in operational practice as "drone danger", was introduced in connection with the threat of attacks. An operational headquarters began work to coordinate the actions of emergency services.

Due to the activity of Ukrainian drones, temporary restrictions on the entry and exit of aircraft were introduced at the airports of Volgograd and Saratov. In aviation practice, such measures are referred to as the "Carpet" plan and are used to ensure flight safety in threat conditions.

According to Avia.pro sources, the attack was carried out using PD-2 and Lyuty drones, which belong to the class of long-range aircraft-type drones. These models are capable of covering significant distances and carrying warheads, which makes them potentially dangerous for infrastructure facilities.
