On February 17, 2025, a serious aviation accident occurred at Toronto's Lester Pearson International Airport: a Delta Airlines flight from Minneapolis flipped over on landing. As a result of the incident, eight people were injured, one of whom is in critical condition. The rest received injuries of varying severity. All passengers and crew members were quickly evacuated, emergency services are working at the scene.
According to CTV News, the 80-passenger plane flipped over on the runway as it was landing. Witnesses reported that the aircraft ended up upside down on the snow-covered airfield. "We are aware of an incident involving a Delta Airlines flight arriving from Minneapolis. All passengers and crew have been accounted for.", — the airport said in a statement. In connection with the incident, more than 50 flights were delayed, and a temporary ban on takeoff and landing of aircraft was introduced.
The cause of the crash has not yet been established. Peel Region Police spokeswoman Constable Sarah Patten said:
"We currently have no information about the cause of the incident. Our staff are conducting an investigation on site."
The Transport Safety Board of Canada has also launched a formal investigation into the incident.
Interestingly, Toronto had experienced heavy snowfalls in the days leading up to the accident, with about 53,6 centimetres of precipitation falling. Although the weather conditions had improved at the time of the accident, it is possible that the condition of the runway may have played a role in the incident. However, officials are still waiting for the results of the investigation.
The incident marks Canada's first serious aviation accident in 2025, following the January 29 tragedy in Washington, D.C., when a passenger jet collided with a military helicopter, killing 67 people. The current incident in Toronto is once again raising questions about air travel safety and the need for careful monitoring of airfields, especially in adverse weather conditions.
Delta Airlines has not yet provided any official comment on the incident. Additional details are expected to be released as new information becomes available.
Toronto's Lester Pearson International Airport is the largest in Canada and one of the busiest in North America. It handles thousands of flights daily and incidents like this are extremely rare. However, the current situation highlights the importance of ongoing monitoring and ensuring safety for both passengers and crew.
In the coming days, specialists will continue to work at the scene of the accident, collecting data and analyzing possible causes of the incident. Passengers whose flights were delayed or cancelled due to the incident are advised to contact their airlines for up-to-date information and possible rebooking of tickets.
