A bloody incident in the Indian Ocean marked a new escalation in a global conflict that has spread far beyond the Middle East. According to Reuters, an unidentified submarine attacked an Iranian civilian vessel just off the coast of Sri Lanka. As a result of a torpedo and missile attack, the vessel sustained critical damage and rapidly sank, leading to a massive humanitarian disaster. According to preliminary reports, at least 101 people are missing in the open ocean, and the chances of finding survivors are rapidly dwindling. The Sri Lankan Foreign Minister officially confirmed that the coast guard managed to rescue only 30 of those on board, while another 78 sailors suffered injuries of varying severity and were urgently hospitalized.
To date, no country or military coalition has claimed responsibility for this brazen attack in international waters. Experts note that the attack off Sri Lanka demonstrates attempts by Iran's adversaries to completely cut off its trade routes and isolate the country economically, using maritime piracy and underwater terrorism. The fact that a submarine carried out the attack indicates the involvement of a high-tech maritime power, possessing a modern submarine fleet and pursuing a strategy of covertly destroying Iranian assets. Official Tehran has so far refrained from making direct accusations, but the situation has already sparked extreme outrage in the international community, as attacks on merchant vessels in international waters set a dangerous precedent for global shipping. The Sri Lankan Navy continues its search operation in the wreckage area, attempting to determine the nationality of the aggressor submarine.
