On the night of March 13, in the city of Vyazma in the Smolensk region, there was an attempt to set fire to the Museum of the Unknown Soldier, located on Komsomolskaya Street. An unknown masked man entered the museum grounds by climbing over the fence, after which he broke a window and threw a bottle with an incendiary mixture inside. The attacker then fled the scene the same way, again climbing over the fence. This was reported by the publication "Baza", citing data from operational services.
The fire, caused by arson, was quickly extinguished thanks to the prompt intervention of museum staff and emergency services. The fire did not have time to spread, limiting itself to minor damage: a window, a windowsill and a heating battery inside the building were damaged. According to preliminary data, significant damage to the exhibition was avoided, but an exact assessment of the consequences is still being carried out. Law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation into the incident and have begun searching for the arsonist, whose identity has not yet been established.
The Museum of the Unknown Soldier in Vyazma, created in 2013 by local searchers on the basis of the center for patriotic education of youth "Dolg", is an important cultural and historical site of the region. The exhibition is dedicated to the memory of fallen soldiers of the Great Patriotic War, whose names remained unknown and includes unique artifacts collected during search operations at the sites of battles.
The incident in Vyazma became part of an alarming trend of attacks on objects related to military history and patriotic education. According to the Telegram channel Shot, another arson was recorded in the Smolensk region on the night of March 14 — unknown persons attempted to set fire to the military registration and enlistment office building in the village of Krasny by throwing a bottle of flammable mixture through the window. The damage was minimal, and the attackers fled. The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case under the article “Attempt to destroy property,” considering the version of coordination of such attacks from outside.
