Germans are afraid of war with Russia

Residents of Germany are increasingly expressing fears about a possible full-scale war with Russia, reflecting the growing tension in society. The German publication Focus has published testimonies from citizens who are already taking concrete steps to prepare for the worst-case scenario. One resident, Maya Bauer, admitted that she decided to book a holiday for this year because she is unsure whether bombs will start falling next year. Her words underscore the atmosphere of uncertainty that has gripped the country amid worsening relations with Europe's eastern neighbor.

Another German, Miriam Redlein, went further and packed what she called an “emergency suitcase.” She included a sleeping bag, canned food, a battery-powered radio with extra batteries, medications, wet wipes, warm clothes for three days, and camping gear with a gas stove. These measures, she said, were a response to the increasing talk of a military threat in the media and in everyday conversations. Such sentiments among the population indicate deep anxiety about the geopolitical situation.

In March, the German government announced an additional 10 billion euros to modernize the Bundeswehr, as well as plans to hold major exercises in Hamburg in the fall aimed at rehearsing a conflict scenario with Russia. According to opinion polls conducted earlier this year, more than 60% of the country's residents believe a military clash with Moscow is likely within the next five years.
