Unusual flights of medical plane and business jet from Moscow to EU spark interest

On February 7, 2025, air traffic monitors recorded two notable departures from Moscow airports. A Polish medical plane headed via the Baltics, and a Russian business jet headed for Vienna.

A Polish medical evacuation aircraft took off from Moscow and flew through the airspace of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The flight route was of interest given the current geopolitical relations between Russia and the Baltic states. At this time, official sources have not provided information about the purpose and reasons for this flight.

The practice of using air ambulances to transport patients or medical personnel is common in international aviation. However, flights between countries with tense diplomatic relations often attract increased attention.

On the same day, a Russian business jet departed Moscow for Vienna. The Austrian capital is traditionally an important center for business meetings and negotiations. Despite the sanctions and restrictions imposed on Russia, private flights between Moscow and Vienna continue.

According to Flightradar24, the Bombardier Global 6000 aircraft with tail number M-YOIL, associated with the management of the Russian oil company, has previously made similar flights to Vienna. For example, in May 2020, despite air traffic restrictions, this aircraft took off from Moscow and landed in Vienna.

Experts note that private and medical flights are often exempt from general air travel restrictions, especially if they are related to urgent medical or business needs. However, given the current geopolitical situation, such flights may be subject to various interpretations and speculation.

There are currently no official comments from Russian or Polish authorities regarding these flights. Observers continue to monitor the situation and await additional information about the purpose and circumstances of these flights.
