On June 23, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump thanked Iran for providing advance notice of a missile attack on the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, which prevented casualties and destruction. In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump called the Iranian strike a "very weak response" to the U.S. strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities on June 22 and called on Tehran and Israel to pursue peace in the region.
"I want to thank Iran for its early warning, which ensured that no lives were lost or injuries sustained. Perhaps Iran can now continue on its path to peace and harmony, and I enthusiastically encourage Israel to do the same," Trump wrote.
According to Reuters, Iran launched 14 missiles at the Al Udeid air base, of which 13 were intercepted by Qatari and US air defense systems, and one, flying in a "safe direction", was not shot down. Qatar's Defense Ministry confirmed that the attack, carried out on June 23, was successfully repelled, and the base, where about 10 US troops are stationed, was partially evacuated in advance.
"No Americans or Qataris were harmed," Doha said, condemning Iran for its "flagrant violation of sovereignty."
Iran’s Operation Basharat al-Fatah (Tidings of Victory), reported by IRIB, was a response to US strikes on the Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites in Operation Midnight Hammer. The US strikes, which included 14 GBU-57 bunker buster bombs and 24 Tomahawk cruise missiles, caused significant damage, although Iran claims to have evacuated key uranium stockpiles. Satellite imagery from Maxar Technologies showed six huge craters at Fordow, one of which experts estimated could accommodate a multi-story building.
Iran also fired a missile at a US base in Iraq, believed to be Ain al-Asad, but it was intercepted, according to CNN. The attack was accompanied by GPS disruptions in Qatar, which Clash Report attributed to Iranian use of electronic warfare. The Wall Street Journal reported that Tehran is moving missile launchers for possible further strikes on US targets in the region, including bases in the UAE and Bahrain.
The international reaction remains tense. Russia and China condemned the US and Israel's actions as a violation of the UN Charter. Russia's permanent representative Vasily Nebenzya said the attacks had "opened a Pandora's box," while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for diplomacy. North Korea has offered Iran help in rebuilding its missile sites. Russia insists on talks, and on June 23 Vladimir Putin discussed the situation with Iran and Iraq.
