Nicaragua allowed to deploy Russian warships, army and aviation in the country

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega authorized the entry of Russian troops into the country for humanitarian purposes from July 1. This is reported by the Spanish agency EFE. The permit also applies to military personnel from the United States, Cuba, Venezuela and other countries and will be valid in the second half of 2023. The President of Nicaragua made a similar decision last year.

According to the decree of President Ortega, military personnel, warships and aircraft of Russia receive the right to stay on the territory of Nicaragua to participate in humanitarian, search and rescue operations. In addition to this, Russian troops can provide assistance to Nicaraguan army units in case of emergencies or natural disasters.

In addition, the presidential decree provides for the deployment of military personnel, ships and aircraft of the armed forces of Mexico, Venezuela, the United States, Cuba and Central American countries, including Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and the Dominican Republic.

Russian Ambassador to Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador Alexander Khokholikov explained that the Nicaraguan government annually passes a law that allows foreign military personnel to stay in the country.

Khokholikov stressed that the Russian military operates in Nicaragua openly and legally, and ships and aircraft, if necessary, will continue to visit Nicaraguan ports and airfields.
