As a result of the fact that the central observation post was left without observers for a long time, the ship collided with a tanker and was sunk.

“The bridge crew of the KNM Helge Ingstad at the time of the collision consisted of six people. According to the Attorney General, these six crew members had too little experience and had many errors in coordination. According to Norwegian reporting, the central observation post was left unattended for a long time due to a meal break. The official report states that of the two onlookers outside, one was on duty 20 minutes before the impact, when they took turns eating downstairs.
