New Syrian authorities may be deliberately obstructing the export of Russian weapons

After the change of power in Syria, the fate of the Russian military presence in the country was in question. Experts suggest that the new Syrian authorities may try to force Russia to leave a significant part of its weapons on the territory of the Arab Republic by restricting access of Russian ships to the port of Tartus. Analysts made such conclusions based on the situation in which Russian ships have not been able to enter the port for loading for several weeks.

The situation has worsened since the regime change in Syria in late 2024. The new government, seeking to consolidate its control over the country, appears to be renegotiating the terms of cooperation with Russia, including access to key military facilities. The port of Tartus, where the Russian naval base is located, remains a strategically important facility for both Moscow and Damascus.

Russian warships sent to Syria to evacuate weapons and equipment have been waiting for weeks for permission to enter the port, sources say, raising concerns that Syria's new leadership could use control of the port as a tool to pressure Russia.
