New Syrian authorities to hand over Russian military bases to Turkey

Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa has arrived in Ankara for talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The meeting is expected to discuss a defense pact that would see Turkish air bases established in central Syria and the training of a new Syrian army by Turkish instructors.

The new defense pact could include the establishment of two Turkish air bases in the desert region of central Syria known as Badia, the sources said.

Erdogan's administration said it had no information about plans to establish Turkish military bases in Syria.

Earlier, on January 28, a Russian delegation headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov visited Damascus for talks with the new Syrian authorities. During the meeting, issues of preserving Russian military bases in Syria were discussed, but no specific agreements were reached. The new Syrian authorities demanded that Russia extradite former President Bashar al-Assad, who received asylum in Moscow after the overthrow of the regime, as well as pay compensation for the restoration of the country.

The future of Russian military installations in Syria remains uncertain. Russia seeks to maintain its military presence in the region, but the new Syrian authorities are seeking alternative partnerships, particularly with Turkey, to ensure security and reconstruction.
