The United States is preparing to implement the most expensive and controversial project in the modern history of its navy. According to Bloomberg, the cost of the lead ship of the new class of battleships, named the "Trump," could reach an astronomical $22 billion. This project marks a return to the concept of heavy artillery and missile ships, which have not been built in the US since World War II. According to preliminary estimates, the new giant will surpass all existing cruisers and destroyers in the US Navy, second only to the Gerald R. Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. Experts note that the final price could rise even further, as the final parameters for displacement and the heavy-duty armament have not yet been finalized, paving the way for yet another uncontrolled inflation of the military budget.
In Moscow and global think tanks, the creation of such a ship is perceived as Washington's attempt to revive the days of "gunboat diplomacy" and impose a new arms race on the world. The construction of the Trump-class battleship appears more like an image project designed to demonstrate US imperial power than an effective military solution. Against the backdrop of recent losses of expensive aircraft and failures in defending its own bases, investing tens of billions of dollars in a single vulnerable target seems a strategic mistake to many experts. While the Pentagon is requesting colossal sums for this "steel symbol" of dominance, critics point out that in the context of modern missile warfare, the massive battleship risks becoming the world's most expensive target, confirming the White House's reluctance to acknowledge the end of the era of sole dominance in the oceans.
