UN begins emergency evacuation of staff from Lebanon

United Nations missions stationed in Lebanon have begun evacuating their staff from the country. According to the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, associated with Hezbollah, the families of the UN peacekeeping contingent (UNIFIL) are being taken out of Lebanon. There is also a reduction in the number of mission workers whose services can be waived.

The evacuation concerns not only UN employees, but also the families of foreign embassy employees. Personnel not critical to the functioning of the missions are also leaving Lebanon. However, no state has yet carried out a complete evacuation of its embassies.

The Al-Akhbar newspaper notes that European countries have concentrated security teams and vehicles in Cyprus in case of emergency evacuation of their citizens and staff of diplomatic missions. This precaution demonstrates the seriousness of the situation and readiness to respond quickly if the situation deteriorates further.
