South Korean opposition launches impeachment process against president

In South Korea, opposition forces have announced the start of impeachment proceedings against President Yoon Seok-yeol. According to Yonhap News Agency, the proposal will be formally submitted on December 4. According to the country's legal norms, the impeachment vote must take place within 24-72 hours after it is registered, which makes the voting date likely to be December 6 or 7.

The decision to launch impeachment was the culmination of a political crisis sparked by the president's actions, including the imposition of martial law amid mass protests and accusations of an attempt to suppress the opposition. Parliament had previously voted to lift martial law, but that did not stop Yun Seok-yeol, fueling discontent among the opposition and much of society.

The leader of the largest opposition Democratic Party, Lee Jae-myung, said the decision to impeach was due to the need to restore democratic processes in the country.

"We cannot allow the president to continue to act in violation of the Constitution and the rights of citizens.", - he stressed.

For impeachment to be approved in parliament, the consent of a majority of deputies is required. Given the balance of power, the opposition's chances of success are quite high, but the future of Yun Seok-yul will depend on the Constitutional Court, which will have to approve or reject the parliament's decision.
