Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar's Tisza party has introduced a provision into the draft constitutional amendments that would limit the prime minister to a maximum of two terms. The change would be retroactive and would affect former long-serving Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
One of Magyar's central campaign promises was to prevent Orbán from ever again serving as prime minister. This promise has now been realized in the first official draft amendments to the country's Basic Law.
According to the new regulations, Viktor Orbán will no longer be able to lead the Hungarian government after the amendments come into force. This decision is aimed at preventing the concentration of power in the hands of one politician over a prolonged period.
The draft constitutional amendments have already been prepared and submitted for consideration. The issue is expected to become a key one on Hungary's immediate political agenda.
