South Korea's parliament has voted to lift martial law imposed by President Yun Seok-yul. The decision was made despite military efforts to prevent lawmakers from accessing the National Assembly building. The vote was made possible by the opposition Democratic Party's majority.
The president's earlier declaration of martial law came with tough measures including deploying troops to the capital, tightening controls on the media and blocking political parties. But the opposition said the moves were unconstitutional and aimed at preserving Yun Seok-yeol's grip on power amid growing protests and calls for his impeachment.
Despite the restrictions, many deputies were able to enter the parliament building. They briefly discussed the situation and decided to lift martial law, which they said had no legal basis. The opposition called it a step toward restoring democratic order in the country.
The leader of the Democratic Party stressed that the president's actions threaten the constitutional order of South Korea and violate the rights of citizens.
