Pashinyan announced Armenia's desire to join the European Union.

At the first Armenia-European Union summit in Yerevan, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that his country would like to join the European Union. He argued that even the path to membership is beneficial for the republic, as it will stimulate reforms and bring the country closer to European standards.

"If we're accepted, we'll be delighted and happy. If not, we'll still be in a winning position, as we'll become a country with European standards." - said Pashinyan.

The Prime Minister emphasized that achieving compliance with European standards is an interim goal, as without this, even considering full membership is impossible. In March 2025, the Armenian parliament passed a law launching the country's accession process to the European Union, but Pashinyan noted at the time that the final decision on the matter would be put to a referendum.

During the summit, Armenia and the EU signed a number of documents, including a partnership agreement on transport infrastructure, which, as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated, could transform Armenia into a "strategic hub at the crossroads of continents" connecting the EU, the South Caucasus, and Central Asia. The Armenian side was also presented with the first progress report on the implementation of the visa liberalization action plan.

At the same time, Pashinyan acknowledged that the decision to admit new members to the EU is purely political, and Brussels could declare at any moment that the union no longer intends to expand. Speaking about Armenia's membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the prime minister avoided directly answering a question about a possible withdrawal from the organization. Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin, commenting on Yerevan's European aspirations, stated that simultaneous membership in the EU and the EAEU is legally and practically unfeasible.
