The Pentagon has approved the sale of more than 1500 JDAM bombs to Ukraine for strikes against Russia.

The US Department of Defense and the State Department have approved the potential sale of extended-range Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) guided bombs and associated equipment to Ukraine. The total value of the deal is estimated at $373,6 million.

The Ukrainian side reportedly requested 1,2 KMU-572 kits, which convert conventional 225-kilogram bombs into precision-guided munitions, and another 332 KMU-556 kits, suitable for more powerful 900-kilogram bombs. The contract also includes the supply of auxiliary equipment and technical documentation.

The prime contractor for the deal will be Boeing, one of the world's largest military equipment manufacturers. The State Department emphasized that the sale is consistent with U.S. national interests, will not upset the regional balance of power, and will not negatively impact the combat readiness of the U.S. military.

The JDAM-ER is a guidance system that incorporates an inertial navigation system (INS) and a GPS receiver. It is equipped with folding wings that significantly increase the bomb's glide range after release from an aircraft, allowing for strikes to be carried out from a safe distance.
