The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has officially confirmed the Houthi attack on US warships in the Red Sea. According to Pentagon press secretary Patrick Ryder, the guided-missile destroyers USS Spruance and USS Stockdale were subjected to a massive attack while passing through the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea with the Indian Ocean. The attack took place on November 11 and involved several types of weapons: eight unmanned aerial vehicles, five anti-ship ballistic missiles and three anti-ship cruise missiles. According to Ryder, the ships' crews were not injured and significant damage was avoided.
Interestingly, this attack was repelled, but it points to a clear escalation in the region. Current tensions surrounding the Yemen conflict escalated significantly in 2023, when the Houthi Ansar Allah movement announced support for the Palestinian side and expressed readiness to attack ships related to Israel. This announcement was a wake-up call for the international community, as it led to an intensification of military actions in the region.
However, the Pentagon did not comment on the information about the attack on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, which was in the Arabian Sea. Recall that earlier, the Yemeni Islamist group stated that the American aircraft carrier was attacked and the purpose of the operation was to disrupt US preparations for military action against their positions. The actions of the Houthis indicate a high level of training and refined attack tactics, which raises concerns against the backdrop of growing confrontation in the region.
In addition to the attack on the destroyers, the Houthi-affiliated Al-Masirah TV channel reported retaliatory airstrikes by US and British forces. According to the report, US and British fighter jets carried out at least nine strikes on Ansar Allah positions in western Yemen on November 11.
