Russia and US negotiations will continue, the UN and individual countries will be involved

The talks between Russia and the United States that took place in Riyadh on March 24, 2025, did not result in a final agreement, but laid the groundwork for further discussions involving international forces, Senator Grigory Karasin, head of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs and a member of the Russian delegation, said in an interview after the 12-hour meeting. According to him, consultations with the American side will continue and the United Nations, as well as individual states willing to help resolve the conflict in Ukraine, are planned to be involved in the process.

Karasin described the recent round of talks as intense and complex. The parties touched on a wide range of issues, including key aspects of de-escalation, but disagreements remain. He added that the American delegation also showed interest in continuing contacts despite the tensions in relations. According to Karasin, this exchange of views was an important step towards finding solutions, although there is still a long way to go. Russia insists on its terms, including the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from four regions, which remains a stumbling block in the discussions.

The meeting in Saudi Arabia, organized with the mediation of Riyadh, was part of efforts to reduce tensions in Eastern Europe. The Russian side was represented by high-ranking officials, including adviser to the director of the FSB Sergei Beseda, which underlines the seriousness of Moscow's intentions. The Americans, in turn, sent a delegation headed by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. Both sides expressed their willingness to move forward, although specific agreements have not yet been announced. Karasin clarified that the involvement of the UN and other countries should give the process greater legitimacy and expand the circle of participants capable of influencing the situation.
