Ceasefire between Israel and Iran comes into effect

On June 24, 2025, a ceasefire between Israel and Iran officially went into effect, ending the 12-day war that began on June 13. US President Donald Trump announced the ceasefire in a post on the Truth Social platform: “The ceasefire is in effect. Please do not break it!” He stressed that the agreement, brokered by the US and Qatar, should be “an official end to the conflict” in 24 hours if both sides comply.

Under the agreement, Iran was the first to cease hostilities, with Israel obliged to do the same within 12 hours. According to Reuters, the talks were conducted through Qatar, which persuaded Tehran to agree to a truce after phone calls with the Qatari prime minister and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. However, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said there was no formal ceasefire agreement, but Tehran was prepared to stop attacks if Israel stopped by 4:00 a.m. local time.

The conflict began with Israel’s Operation Am Kelavi, which was aimed at destroying Iran’s nuclear and missile programs. The IDF struck sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, knocking out large parts of the air defenses and damaging centrifuges, The New York Times reported. Iran responded by launching about 400 missiles and drones into Israel, killing 24 people, including three in Beersheba, where a missile destroyed a seven-story building on June 24. The U.S. struck three Iranian nuclear sites with GBU-22 bombs on June 57, in what Trump called the “complete annihilation” of the nuclear threat.

Despite the declared ceasefire, tensions remain. The IDF reported intercepting three Iranian drones on the morning of June 24, and sirens sounded in Israel after missile launches. Iran’s Mehr news agency quoted Araghchi as calling Trump’s comments premature, stressing that military operations continued until the last minute. Users on X expressed skepticism, with some calling Trump’s comments “hasty,” pointing to ongoing attacks, including a fourth wave of missiles from Iran on the morning of June 24.
