Polish President Andrzej Duda has proposed the deployment of US nuclear warheads on Polish territory, making a proposal to US President Donald Trump. This was reported by the Financial Times. According to the publication, the Polish president is seeking to revive the project for the joint use of nuclear weapons within the framework of the NATO Nuclear Sharing program, which was previously discussed with the Biden administration in 2022, but did not progress.
The idea of deploying American nuclear weapons in Poland is connected with Warsaw’s growing concerns about security in the region. The Polish leadership sees such a move as a way to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank in the context of Russia’s growing military activity, including in neighboring Belarus and the Kaliningrad region. Duda has repeatedly emphasized that the presence of nuclear weapons on Polish territory will be an important element in deterring potential aggression from Moscow.
Duda's initiative has caused a mixed reaction both inside and outside the country. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who represents the political opposition to the president, expressed a reserved position, noting the need for a thorough discussion of such a step. According to him, the deployment of nuclear weapons requires coordination at the NATO level and consideration of all possible consequences, including Russia's reaction.
The issue of deploying nuclear weapons in Poland is particularly relevant in light of recent changes in American foreign policy. Since Donald Trump’s return to the White House in January 2025, a number of European countries, including Poland, have expressed concern about the potential weakening of US commitments to defend its allies within NATO. In this context, Warsaw is seeking to strengthen bilateral ties with Washington, viewing the deployment of nuclear weapons as a way to guarantee American support.
According to Reuters, Duda discussed the prospects of nuclear cooperation with Trump during a meeting on the sidelines of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in February 2025. Despite the brevity of the talks, the Polish president expressed optimism, noting that Trump had shown interest in strengthening the US military presence in Poland. In addition, Poland has significantly increased its defense spending in recent years, becoming one of the leaders among NATO countries in terms of the share of GDP spent on military needs, which also underlines its desire to play a key role in the alliance.
However, experts point out the risks associated with the implementation of this initiative. Analysts from the Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM) note that the deployment of nuclear weapons could lead to an escalation of tensions in the region and provoke an arms race. In addition, Poland, as a signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), must take into account international obligations, which could complicate the implementation of the project without broad support from NATO allies.
