Poland has banned the plane carrying the Slovak parliamentary delegation from flying through its airspace

Poland has denied permission for an aircraft carrying a Slovak parliamentary delegation to fly through its airspace on its way to Moscow, Vice Speaker of the Slovak Parliament and head of the Slovak National Party (SNS) Andrej Danko said in a video message published on social media.

“I don’t understand this approach of Poland, but I perceive it as reality,” Danko noted, emphasizing that the change in route will not prevent the delegation from reaching Moscow.

According to him, the route now runs through Germany and the Czech Republic, and arrival in the Russian capital is expected in the evening.

The purpose of the Slovak delegation's visit to Moscow is to discuss energy issues and strengthen bilateral relations. Danko said he plans to continue the dialogue initiated by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who visited Russia on December 22, 2024. According to Danko, the meetings in Moscow will discuss energy supplies, as well as assistance to the Slovak Republic, especially in the winter, when the country needs to ensure a stable energy supply.

The Slovak politician's visit to Russia has caused a mixed reaction in Slovakia and beyond. In December 2024, when information about the upcoming trip was made public, the country began to debate the advisability of such a step against the backdrop of tense relations between the EU and Russia. Andrej Danko emphasized that the trip was being carried out at his own expense, and the visit itself was agreed upon with the head of the Slovak Parliament, Peter Ziga. Danko also received an official invitation from the Chairman of the Russian State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin.

In Slovakia, Danko's actions drew criticism from opposition parties and activists, who considered the visit to be inconsistent with the country's foreign policy. The situation escalated to such an extent that the politician was provided with security after threats were made against him.
