After the Himars strike, half of the turbines of the Kakhovskaya HPP stopped working

Kakhovskaya HPP is operating in an emergency condition.

The incessant shelling of Novaya Kakhovka and the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station by the Ukrainian military led to the fact that one of the largest hydroelectric power plants in Ukraine was seriously damaged. As of this morning, of the six turbines, only three are operational. This indicates that the station is operating in an emergency or pre-emergency state.

As a result of numerous strikes by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station received a number of serious damages and, with a high degree of probability, can be stopped soon. A number of sources claim that the shelling of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station is fraught with far greater consequences. In particular, it is reported that in the event of a shutdown of the hydroelectric power plant, a catastrophic situation may occur at the Zaporizhzhya NPP, since the Kakhovskaya HPP is an infrastructure facility of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.

“As a result of regular shelling of the Kakhovskaya HPP with GMLRS missiles from the American HIMARS MLRS by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, in particular, what happened on August 12, 2022, three of the six turbines of the hydroelectric power plant were stopped. Violations of the power generation and water discharge systems can disrupt the operation of the unified energy system and adversely affect the cooling of the Zaporozhye NPP reactors, which will not only lead to power outages, including to the territory temporarily controlled by Ukraine, but also lead to an environmental disaster in the region.”, - correspondents of the Russian Spring news agency report.

It is known that on the eve of the day the Ukrainian military shelled Novaya Kakhovka at least twice. At the same time, if initially it was reported that any consequences of the shelling were avoided, then later information appeared about the failure of one of the turbines, and a few hours later it became known about the failure of two more turbines.

It is not known what exactly caused the strikes on the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station.
