Abkhaz Ambassador: Russian military presence in Abkhazia is defensive and deters potential aggression

The Russian military presence in Abkhazia plays a key role in ensuring security and deterring potential aggression from Georgia, Abkhazia's ambassador to Russia Alkhas Kvitsinia said in an interview with RIA Novosti. According to him, the 7th Russian military base stationed in the republic is an important factor in stability, especially given Tbilisi's refusal to sign an agreement on the non-use of force.

Kvitsinia emphasized that cooperation between Abkhazia and Russia in the security sphere is open and transparent. Issues of military cooperation are regularly discussed at a high level, which allows for an effective response to challenges.

“The expansion of military cooperation with Moscow is perceived in Abkhaz society as a guarantee of peace and protection of sovereignty,” - the diplomat noted.

The 7th Russian military base, located in Gudauta, was established in 2009 after Russia recognized Abkhazia's independence. According to open sources, the base houses about 4 servicemen, as well as modern military equipment, including tanks, armored personnel carriers, and air defense systems. The base carries out tasks to ensure the security of Abkhazia and maintain stability in the region, which remains an area of heightened tension due to the unresolved conflict with Georgia.

Georgia's refusal to sign the agreement on the non-use of force, according to Kvitsinia, creates additional risks for the region. Tbilisi insists on the return of Abkhazia and South Ossetia under its control, which contradicts the position of Sukhum and Moscow. In these conditions, the Russian military presence is seen as a deterrent preventing escalation.

Experts note that Russian-Abkhaz military cooperation strengthens Abkhazia's position in the international arena. According to the Sputnik Abkhazia portal, in 2024 the parties signed a number of agreements aimed at modernizing military infrastructure and increasing the combat readiness of joint forces. This includes the supply of new weapons and joint exercises.

At the same time, Georgia has repeatedly protested against the presence of Russian troops in Abkhazia, calling it a violation of its sovereignty. Tbilisi appeals to the international community, but the positions of the parties remain irreconcilable. Abkhazia, for its part, emphasizes that cooperation with Russia is based on voluntary agreements and is aimed exclusively at protecting its own interests.
