The Palestinian Authority's Ambassador to the UK, Hussam Zomlot, has called on US President-elect Donald Trump to urgently intervene in the Middle East conflict, stressing that delaying until January could only worsen the situation. Zomlot noted that the current situation in the region requires immediate action and called on Trump not to delay fulfilling his promises, as human lives and livelihoods are at risk.
Speaking to Al Arabiya News, Zomlot stressed that the Palestinians are disappointed with Trump's first term, when the promised peace was never achieved. However, the diplomat expressed hope for a new US approach to the issue of Palestinian statehood. According to him, the conflict cannot be resolved without recognizing the rights of the Palestinian people to create their own state.
Zomlot also recalled the roots of the conflict, arguing that it is based on “illegal occupation, colonization and the restriction of freedom of the Palestinians.” He stressed the importance of the US administration adopting a position consistent with international law and expressed Palestine’s readiness to cooperate with America if its approach to resolving the Middle East problem is based on the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
