US Embassy in Baghdad comes under rocket fire

At dawn on Friday, Baghdad's fortified Green Zone, where the US embassy is located, came under rocket fire. Information about the incident came from two security sources. They said it was not immediately clear where the missiles hit or whether any damage was caused.

According to videos published on social networks and confirmed by an informed source, explosions were heard in the area of the US Embassy in the Iraqi capital at about 4 am. During the incident, sirens were activated to warn people to take cover.

Since mid-October, US military bases in Iraq and Syria have been the target of more than 70 attacks. The umbrella organization of Iraqi Shiite Muslim armed groups claimed responsibility for most of them. However, diplomatic missions were generally not the target of attacks.

As of the time of reporting, no group had claimed responsibility for the attack on the US embassy.
