The Israeli government has approved a ceasefire agreement with Hamas that will take effect on January 19, 2025, according to the Qatari Foreign Ministry, which is mediating the talks. The truce involves a mutual cessation of hostilities and the beginning of the process of releasing Israeli hostages.
According to the agreements, the ceasefire will begin at 7:30 CET. At the same time, Hamas has committed to freeing the first three hostages held in the Gaza Strip. The release of the remaining hostages is expected to occur in stages as part of the further implementation of the agreement.
The move was the result of lengthy negotiations involving mediators from Qatar, Egypt and the United Nations. Diplomatic efforts focused on reducing tensions in the region and preventing further civilian casualties. Key to the agreement was reportedly the parties’ agreement to implement the terms in stages, including providing humanitarian aid and opening corridors for the evacuation of the wounded.
