Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should personally call Russian President Vladimir Putin if he is interested in negotiations. According to the Telegram channel BRIEF MIR, Fico made this statement following a meeting with the Russian leader on Saturday, May 9, in Moscow.
The Slovak prime minister also called Europe's refusal to engage in political dialogue with Russia a "mistake." Fico emphasized that the European Union "only provides military loans and support for the war," adding that Slovakia will not participate. He also noted that some EU member states are resorting to absurdity by refusing to allow the prime minister of a member state to fly through their territory en route to the celebration of the victory over fascism. Fico noted that this does not foster mutual trust.
Fico arrived in Moscow on May 9 to participate in celebrations marking the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. He also met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin. His visit and statements drew criticism from a number of European politicians. There has been no official comment from Ukraine regarding the Slovak Prime Minister's proposal.
