"We'll have to check if the animal has rabies": Medvedev comments on Ukraine's attack on the Kropotkinskaya oil pumping station

On February 17, 2025, the Kropotkinskaya oil pumping station (OPS) of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), located in the Krasnodar Territory, was attacked by seven unmanned aerial vehicles. As a result, the station was decommissioned, but there were no casualties among the personnel and an oil spill was avoided. Oil transportation through the Tengiz-Novorossiysk pipeline continues at reduced rates, bypassing the damaged station.

Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev commented on the incident, comparing the attack to a situation where "a rabid animal bites its owner." He emphasized that the Kropotkinskaya oil pumping station pumps oil from an international consortium, over 40% of which belongs to American companies. Medvedev noted that now the "owner of the aggressive creature" will have to check whether the animal suffers from rabies in order to protect its health.

KTK notified all shareholders, including representatives of companies from the US and Europe, about the attack on a civilian facility and its consequences. KTK General Director Nikolai Gorban and his management went to the scene of the incident to assess the damage and determine the time frame for restoring the station's functionality.

The Kropotkinskaya pumping station is the largest CPC oil pumping station in Russia. The 1511 km long CPC pipeline system transports more than two-thirds of Kazakhstan's export oil, as well as crude from Russian fields, including the Caspian. The CPC marine terminal in Novorossiysk is equipped with three remote berthing devices, allowing tankers to be safely loaded at a considerable distance from the shore.

Experts believe that the attack on the Kropotkinskaya NPS may be linked to Kyiv's dissatisfaction with the planned efforts of Russia and the United States to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. In addition, the incident highlights the vulnerability of critical infrastructure and the need to strengthen security measures at such facilities.

Earlier, on the night of February 17, Ukrainian drones attacked oil refineries in Slavyansk-na-Kubani and the village of Ilsky in Krasnodar Krai. According to local authorities, the drones were shot down, but the debris damaged the windows and roofs of private homes. A girl was hospitalized in Slavyansk-na-Kubani. No information was reported about damage to the plants themselves.
