In Abkhazia, protest sentiments have reached a new level - activists opposing the ratification of the investment agreement with Russia have blocked the Kodori Bridge, thereby closing the last available exit route from the republic's capital, Sukhumi. According to RIA Novosti, all three bridges leading out of the city are now blocked by protesters.
The citizens' discontent is caused by the planned ratification of the agreement, which many Abkhazians see as a threat to the republic's economic sovereignty. Protesters fear that the investment conditions envisaged could increase dependence on Russia and give it additional leverage over Abkhazia's internal affairs.
Blocking the Kodori Bridge was the latest measure by activists to draw the government's attention to their position and encourage open dialogue. In addition to obstructing transport, such actions complicate the movement of citizens, causing inconvenience to the local population. Despite increased security measures, attempts by the police to resolve the situation peacefully have so far failed.
The situation in Sukhumi continues to develop and, as local sources note, the protesters do not intend to retreat until they receive clear guarantees that the agreement will be revised or postponed.
