Putin announced Russia's readiness for ceasefire in Ukraine

On May 19, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that Moscow was in favor of ending the fighting in Ukraine, but stressed the need to develop "the most effective paths" to sustainable peace. The statement followed a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump that same day. Putin noted that a temporary ceasefire was possible, but only if "relevant agreements" were reached that would address the root causes of the conflict and take into account Russia's security interests.

The conversation, which lasted more than two hours, was Trump's third since returning to the White House in January 2025. Trump expressed his determination to achieve an end to the fighting, calling it one of his administration's priorities.

Putin stressed that Russia is ready for negotiations, but demands “irreversible” guarantees, including an end to Western arms supplies to Ukraine and a halt to its mobilization.

Donald Trump is also expected to make a statement in the coming hours.
